چکیده

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) has the ability of dynamic self-organization, self-configuration and selfhealing. These features facilitate quick deployment, easy maintenance, low cost and high scalability. These also provide cost effective solutions for internet facilities which has led to their popularity. There is an access of shared medium by all the existing nodes in the network. It may lead to collisions when multiple nodes access the medium simultaneously, thereby increasing the congestion in network. The Binary Exponential Back-off Algorithm will control the shared medium access and helps to reduce collisions and congestion in the network.

On a Modified Backoff Algorithm for MAC Protocol in MANETs

In wireless communication environments, backoff is traditionally based on the IEEE binary exponential backoff (BEB). Using BEB results in a high delay in message transmission, collisions, and ultimately wasting the limited available bandwidth. As each node has to obtain medium access before transmitting a message, in dense networks, the collision probability in the medium access control (MAC) l...

Performance Evaluation of Different Backoff Algorithms in IEEE 802.15.4 Using Double Sensing

The IEEE 802.15.4 is the standard for Low Rate Wireless Personal Area network (LR-WPAN). It is widely used in many application areas. The standard uses Slotted CSMA/CA mechanism in its contention access period (CAP) for the beacon enabled mode. The protocol has two modes single sensing (SS) and double sensing (DS). The protocol also adopts a binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm. In this p...

Priority-Based CCA Periods for Efficient and Reliable Communications in Wireless Sensor Networks

The IEEE 802.15.4 standard utilizes the CSMA-CA mechanism to control nodes’ access to the shared wireless communication medium. CSMA-CA implements the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm by which a node refrains from sending any packet before the expiry of its backoff period. After that, the node is required to sense the medium for two successive time slots to assert that the medium is c...

E-BEB Algorithm to Improve Quality of Service on Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

The Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is the main element which determines the system throughput in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) IEEE 802.11 standard. The MAC technique of the IEEE 802.11 protocol is called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). In DCF, stations contend for the use of the channel in distributed manner via the use of the Carrier Sensing Multiple Access with Collisio...

Is Our Model for Contention Resolution Wrong?

Randomized binary exponential backoff (BEB) is a popular algorithm for coordinating access to a shared channel. With an operational history exceeding four decades, BEB is currently an important component of several wireless standards. Despite this track record, prior theoretical results indicate that under bursty traffic (1) BEB yields poor makespan and (2) superior algorithms are possible. To ...
